White, flaky codfish is one of the world's most popular fishes to eat, thanks to its mild flavor and versatility in a range of dishes. The Miyako Pacific Codfish Festival celebrates this, and the Miyako City Fish Market will be filled with a variety of gourmet food stalls selling cod-inspired dishes such as cod soup.
Up until the end of January, 26 restaurants in Miyako City, Yamada Town, and Iwaizumi Town will also be serving up meals with cod as the primary ingredient, including the likes of crispy battered fish and chips and fried codfish curry. The full list of restaurants participating in this additional event can be found here (in Japanese).
Getting there
The Miyako City Fish Market is located around 7 minutes by taxi - or approximately 30 minutes on foot - from Miyako Station, which is served by the JR Yamada Line and the Sanriku Railway's Rias Line.
