Hishino Onsen is located Komoro, Nagano, and is known for its mild alkaline hot spring water that offers a host of therapeutic effects—a soak here is said to help with ailments like nerve pain, muscle pain, joint issues, and fatigue recovery. If you're looking for an additional reason to visit this part of Japan, there is a photogenic illumination event taking place this winter that incorporates icicles and lanterns.

Running from the beginning of February until the end of March, the event features a stunning display of icicles at Tokiwa-ga-ike Pond which will be illuminated in various colors of the rainbow. Additionally, numerous traditional lanterns will brighten up the water's edge, adding to the ethereal atmosphere.

The icicle and lantern illuminations will take place from 4.30pm until 11pm on each evening of the event, and best of all, admission is free of charge.

Getting there

The event takes place at Tokiwa-ga-ike Pond by Hishino Onsen Tokiwakan, which can be accessed in around 12 minutes driving time from Komoro IC on the Joshin-Etsu Expressway. Visitors are advised to park in the designated event areas, as inn parking is limited to overnight guests.

For those visiting via public transport, head to Komoro Station which is served by the Shinano Railway Line and Koumi Line. The venue is about 12 minutes by taxi from there.
