Excellent Neapolitan pizzerias are increasingly abundant in Tokyo and the quality of the pizzas are world class, with many pizzerias winning international awards and earning places on the list of top 100 pizzerias in the world. Located within walking distance from JR Ebisu Station, Pizza Marumo first opened in 2022 and has gained popularity quickly. Chef Motokura was chosen as one of the top 10 Best pizza chefs in 2023.
The menu is diverse with pizzas grouped into tomato, cheese, cream and mayonnaise based styles. The traditional tomato based Margherita and Marinara pizzas are simple yet excellent. The Japanese Umami pizza is incredibly creative and includes mushroom cream sauce, mozzarella and pecorino cheese, mackerel, bonito flakes, shaved kombu, sesame and soy sauce. The pizza is visually stunning as well as delicious. Other unusual pizzas include a Japanese black chili pizza, a lamb and cheese pizza, and a Teriyaki pizza with chicken sausage. Vegan pizzas are available for those who are lactose intolerant. Appetizers include salads, prosciutto, wood fired meats, roasted cauliflower, or foccacia with hummus. There is even a seasonal fruit pizza for dessert. Drinks include cocktails, beer, wine, sake, and various soft drinks as well as coffee.
The restaurant is lively and counter seats are recommended to get a chance to see the pizzaiolos prepare and cook the pizzas in the wood-fired oven. Pizza Marumo is open daily from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. for lunch, and 5 p.m to 11 p.m. for dinner. The store is closed on Wednesday. It is worth making the trip for the excellent pizzas while in the Western neighborhoods of Tokyo.
