Taking place in early January, the Oyster Festival in Ueno Park includes three days of oyster eating and sake tasting in the heart of Tokyo. There will be oysters on offer from various prefectures across Japan, including Hiroshima, Hyogo, Iwate, and Hokkaido.
The event's pièce de résistance is an enormous oyster pot with a 2 meter diameter, which contains enough oyster soup to feed an incredible 5000 people. The first 200 people who follow the event's official SNS every day will get treated to a free cup of it, and after that it's served at the reasonable price of 300 yen.
Along with the fresh oysters and oyster soup, other oyster dishes will be available to purchase, including oyster yakisoba and oyster curry.
Admission to the event is free of charge, but bring yen if you plan on trying some of the dishes on offer.
Getting there
The event takes place at Ueno Park's Takenodai Square, which can be accessed in under 10 minutes on foot from Ueno Station.
