About Tokushima City

Tokushima City is the capital of Tokushima Prefecture and home to Japan's most famous dance festival, Awa Odori.

Every August, the Obon Festival is held over three days to honor the ancestors of Buddhist followers. This includes a spectacle called "Fools's Dance", where people of all ages dress up in traditional attire to perform a dance that is accompanied by singing and music. The roads in downtown Tokushima are usually cordoned off to make way for this exciting annual event.

An iconic sight in Tokushima City is Mount Bizan, which is located in the middle of the city. At its peak, visitors can get a bird's-eye view of Tokushima City and not many people know of its gorgeous nighttime view. There are shrines and temples along the way up for those who wish to hike, but there is also the Bizan Ropeway, an aerial lift that can take visitors to the top from the Awa Odori Kaikan museum.
