Running annually since 2003, the Shizukumiya Festival in Hida Takayama, Gifu Prefecture, is a popular event that honors the completion of freshly brewed sake and offers prayers for a prosperous harvest.

The highlight of the festival is the grand procession of the sakadarumikoshi (a portable shrine shaped like a sake barrel), which is carried by energetic participants throughout the town. The parade begins and ends at Takayama Jinya Square, filling the streets with excitement as it makes its way through the city. One of the most lively moments of the event occurs at the Miyagawa riverbed near Miyamae Bridge, where participants immerse themselves in water as part of a ritual cleansing and warding-off of evil spirits, accompanied by hand-held fireworks.

Aside from the procession, festival attendees can enjoy various attractions at Takayama Jinya Square, including a limited-time sale of "Kami no Shizuku," a sacred sake made from locally cultivated rice. Stage performances from local artists and food trucks offering delicious regional specialties create the perfect place to soak in the festive atmosphere.

There is no admission fee to enjoy the event, but bring along some yen if you plan on purchasing any food or drink items from vendors.

Getting there

Takayama Jinya Square will host the sake sale, stage performances, and food trucks, and the mikoshi water ceremony will be held at the Miyagawa Riverbank near Miyamae Bridge. The general area can be accessed in around 10 minutes on foot from Takayama Station, which is served by the JR Takayama Line.
