Thaliya Curry and Naan is a North Indian restaurant situated close to Waseda University that specializes in… Naan and Curry! What`s great about this place is that the Naan is free! So whenever you are done with your first serving of Naan, you can ask for seconds, thirds and more till your tummy says it`s enough. That is the reason why this restaurant is so popular with students from the university, because not only is it affordable at 600 Yen per meal, but you can eat as much as you want!
The only downside is that they do not provide refills on curries. Hence, you can either chew on plain naan all the time or ration your curry, such that you have enough to continually enhance the flavor of your naan. So you might be wondering, what kind of curries do they have exactly? Well, they have a list of curries that comes with varying degrees of spiciness. I opted for Butter Chicken and Spicy curry. The butter chicken sauce was flavorful and rich in taste whereas the spicy curry was a little bland. My friend who brought me to this restaurant chose Seafood curry instead and if I were to return to this restaurant again, I would opt for Seafood over the poor spicy curry that I chose.
You can also opt out of getting only plain naans and try out the different types of naan on hand. This includes Garlic Naan, Butter Naan and more but they do come at an extra cost.
It is also delightful to know that they do host naan eating competitions and the current record stands at 7 naans, by a Japanese man whose photo is plastered on the wall of the restaurant. You may think 7 naans is nothing, but the naans here are huge! I have no idea how that guy managed to chow down 7 naans for I already had my fill with my second naan.
Thus, the next time you are feeling extremely famished, come by Naan and Curry for who knows? You might be the one who could chow down 8 naans and be crowned the new Naan Champion. If they ever kick you out for eating too much, you can try their other locations, such as Shin Aoyama.
