Tokyo has been turning out a good number of top-notch burger shops in the past few years, and one that's worth visiting when you crave a beef patty is Burger Mania. While the company now boasts three outlets in total (Ebisu, Shirokane and Hiroo), I made my way to the central Hiroo location this past week, just a few hundred meters from the Hiroo metro station.
A sign in English on the sidewalk will point you up to Burger Mania's second floor location. Inside, you have your choice of tables either in the cozy backroom of the restaurant or up front by the windows. In warm weather, you can even choose to sit out on the terrace to enjoy your meal.
The menu is bilingual and offers quite a selection. Of top consideration, obviously, are the restaurant's burgers. All are prepared fresh as soon as you place your order - no sitting around or being reheated. Toppings range from the typical (think cheese, lettuce and the now commonplace avocado) to the unique (rosemary and lemon, or chili beans and salsa). There is even a monthly burger, which in April was a delicious stewed pork and beef combination.
If you're not too keen on the burgers, there are some non-beef options to choose from. The menu promises over half a dozen sandwiches (grilled chicken, pastrami, and even an all veggie option) or you could opt for one of the soups (like clam chowder) or rice plates (taco rice is a favorite). For nibbling, there is an array of side dishes, mostly fried (onion rings and the like) but with some specialty meatballs and spicy buffalo wings. A few fresh salads and some dessert and pancake options round out the rather sizable menu.
For beverages, you could go the traditional route and choose from one of the milkshake flavors (cookies and cream!) or opt for a simple juice or soda. They also have coffee and tea and even a small selection of craft beers.
Pet owners may be happy to know that at least small dogs are welcome, both inside and outside.
If you'd rather eat on the run or at your apartment or hotel, Burger Mania also does take-out, a great option for when you want to kick back with a gourmet burger in the comfort of your own home.
