Berg Cafe, Shinjuku

Vintage German Gastropub in the basement of Shinjuku Lumine Est

Berg is a unique German style gastropub in the basement level of the Lumine Est building in Shinjuku. Close to the JR Shinjuku Station East exit, it is a great place for an early morning breakfast, light meal or late night snack before heading out on the train. Berg has been around since 1970 and retains a nostalgic vibe. The decor is cozy and eclectic with a mixture of cartoon art, vintage decorations and anti-war posters. Everything seems carefully curated, reflecting the owners' personal touch. The clientele seem to be those in the know, as the fare is not the typical Japanese standard especially when compared to the surrounding restaurants in the basement. The unique blend of old school cafe, German restaurant and Western influences including the music make for a special atmosphere. One can not help feeling like they are experiencing a bit of history at Berg.

Breakfast fare includes thick toast with boiled egg and cured meats, as well as a variety of hot dogs. Their signature Berg hot dog is excellent and the staff recommend eating it plain without condiments. Alternatively, the hot dog can be topped with cheese, chili or a slice of bacon. There are also other German dishes including sausages, herring sandwiches, potato salad and stews including curry with rice. The service is fast and the staff friendly. At times it can be crowded as the space is on the smaller side, but the turnover is fairly quick.

Prices are cheap and the menu is in Japanese only. Coffee, beer and wine are available all day. There is also a variety of merchandise sold on site, including postcards, T-shirts and coffee mugs. Berg is open daily from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Definitely worth visiting as it is a one of a kind place.
