Among the myriad of cherry blossom destinations in Japan, there are some with impressively old trees. At Takamori Kannon-do in Fujimi Town, Nagano, there is a weeping cherry tree which is estimated to be over 250 years old. The contrast between the pastel pink blossoms and the thatched roof building on the grounds is regarded as one of the most beautiful springtime views in the area.
The Takamori Kannon-do Sakura Festival is held when the blossoms are at their best, and along with the floral splendor there will be tasty eats like tonjiru (pork soup), mochi, and other local goods available for purchase. There is no admission fee to enjoy the atmosphere of the event, but bring yen if you plan on buying anything.
Getting there
Takamori Kannon-do is located approximately 10 minutes on foot from JR Shinano-Sakai Station, which is served by the Chūō Main Line. As parking in the area is limited, visitors are advised to utilize public transportation wherever possible.
