The area of Naruko in north-eastern Miyagi Prefecture is most famous for its hot springs and traditional kokeshi dolls. However, it is also abundant in nature. A favorite time to visit is late October to mid November to see the brilliant fall colors. Naruko Gorge offers excellent views from above and below. Snap a shot from the bridge to see the distant train tracks. Or use the viewing platforms at the visitor center to capture a picture perfect scene. Hike down into the gorge using the paved path to walk along the river.
The visitor's center has parking, restrooms, gift shops, and simple eateries. Access via a 20 minute taxi ride or one hour walk from Naruko-Onsen Station. Bring a camera!
