The Shonan International Marathon has been a winter tradition for over 20 years, drawing more than 20,000 runners annually to the beautiful Shonan coastline. Known for its spectacular scenery and strong commitment to sustainability, the event is more than just a race, serving as a celebration of community, fitness, and environmental consciousness.

The course offers sweeping views of Mt. Fuji and passes through some of Japan’s most iconic coastal spots, including Enoshima, Kamakura, and Yokohama. Easily accessible from Tokyo, it’s a favorite among both seasoned marathoners and casual runners looking to enjoy a unique running experience.

What sets the Shonan International Marathon apart is its groundbreaking commitment to sustainability. Dubbed the “My Bottle Marathon,” it was the first event of its size to go completely cup- and plastic-free. Runners bring their own bottles or cups and refill at hydration stations along the course, in a move that has already helped eliminate over 1.5 million disposable cups.

The event features a variety of race categories, from the full marathon to a 10km Fun Run, as well as shorter distances for students, families, and runners with disabilities. There’s something for everyone, no matter your age or fitness level.

With its focus on reducing waste and protecting the natural beauty of the Shonan area, the marathon has become a model for eco-conscious running events worldwide. Participants aren’t just chasing personal bests, but contributing to a cleaner, greener future.
