As the rainy season begins to settle over the mountains of Hakone each June, an ever-popular seasonal train event returns to the tracks. The Night Hydrangea Train offers a chance to ride through a route filled with blooming flowers, all softly illuminated in the quiet of early summer evenings. Operated by Odakyu Hakone, this limited event train will run along the Hakone Tozan Line between Hakone-Yumoto and Gora stations.

Hydrangeas line the tracks, blooming in beautiful shades of blue, purple, and pink, and at night they are illuminated to create a calm, almost otherworldly scene. During the ride, the train slows down or stops in areas where the flowers are at their best, and lights inside the carriage are turned off so passengers can enjoy the view without distraction. This year’s ride will use the Allegra train, which recently marked its 10th anniversary.

In addition to the views, the train offers a few thoughtful touches. There will be photo opportunities at Miyanoshita and Tonosawa stations, and each rider receives a souvenir paper fan designed with the event’s hydrangea theme. Tickets for reserved seats go on sale from May 14 through the Hakone Navi website, and the seat fee is priced at 500 JPY for adults and 250 JPY for children.
Even if you don’t board the special train, the hydrangeas along the route will be illuminated from June 13th to June 30th between 6:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., and can be seen from regular service trains as well.
This event has its roots in the 1970s, when staff began planting flowers along the tracks. Decades later, it’s become a quiet tradition in Hakone, offering a simple but memorable way to enjoy the season.
