Peonies are known for their large, lush, and fragrant blooms, making them popular flowers in gardens and floral arrangements. They can be enjoyed at several places in Japan, including the Senhime Peony Garden at Himeji Castle.
The blooming season here is typically around mid-April, and when the flowers are at their best an annual peony festival takes place. The event also includes a variety of music and stage performances, plus a peony seedling market if you'd like to try growing them yourself.
Please note that the event will still be held if there is light rain, but in case of stormy weather it will be postponed to the following day. Admission is free of charge.
Getting there
The Senhime Peony Garden is located on the west side of Sannomaru Square at Himeji Castle. The area can be accessed in around 20 minutes on foot from JR Himeji Station (Sanyo Shinkansen, Sanyo Main Line, Bantan Line, and Kishin Line).
