Himeji Castle is one of Japan's most well-preserved castles, and it was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site back in 1993. One of the best times to visit is during the Himeji Castle Festival, which takes place for three days in May and has a history spanning over 70 years.
The 2024 event schedule is as follows:
17th (Fri) Takigi Noh at Himeji Castle
18th (Sta): Parade, stage events, etc.
19th (Sun): Kids' event, Himeji Yosa Koi Festival, etc.
Whether you have an interest in Japanese history or you simply appreciate lively cultural festivals, this event is worth checking out if you're in the area.
Getting there
Himeji Castle can be accessed in just under 20 minutes on foot (or around 5 minutes by taxi) from Himeji Station, which is served by the San'yō Shinkansen, the San'yō Main Line, the Bantan Line, and the Kishin Line.
For those who opt to drive, the closest expressway exit is the San'yō Himeji-Higashi IC on the San'yō Expressway.
