Famous for sake, snow, and hot springs, Akita Prefecture may initially evoke ideas of a winter wonderland. It certainly delivers on that in spades, but once the snow has melted there is still plenty to see and do. If you visit during spring, this guide covers four destinations to get your fix of floral color.

Senshu Park

Each year during spring, Akita's Senshu Park is filled with color when over 700 cherry trees begin to bloom. The park was built at the site of the Kubota Castle Ruins, and was named as one of Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom viewing spots back in 1990.

Mato Park

From the mid to late April timeframe each year, Akita's Mato Park is home to an incredible 2000 cherry trees in bloom - it's no surprise that the venue was also named as one of Japan's Top 100 cherry blossom viewing spots. The annual cherry blossom festival at the park draws visitors from both inside and outside the prefecture.

Taihei Azalea Temple

Around 20 minutes by car from the Akita Station area, you'll find the Taihei Azalea Temple. The temple is a place where people come to pray for safe childbirth, and during spring the grounds are filled with approximately 2000 azalea bushes in various colors. You can take a look at the grounds in full bloom via the video below.

Ishida Rose Garden

Head to the Ishida Rose Garden in late spring, and you can enjoy approximately 500 different types of these beautiful flowers. Along with the spectacular blooms to admire, there are rose flavored sweets and rose saplings available for purchase, and an evening illumination event while the flowers are at their best. An added bonus: admission to the garden is free of charge!
