As Osaka welcomes the world for the 2025 Osaka–Kansai Expo, Katsuo-ji Temple is launching a unique cultural event to mark the occasion. Running throughout the Expo period from April 13th to October 13th, the World Daruma Challenge (WDC) invites visitors to take part in a creative photo and social media campaign designed to foster international connection.
Katsuo-ji, a 1300-year-old temple nestled in the hills of northern Osaka, is known for its deep spiritual roots and iconic “Victory Daruma.” These daruma dolls are symbols of personal commitment and perseverance, encouraging visitors to overcome life’s challenges by setting a goal to achieve. In line with this message of personal strength, the temple hopes to inspire visitors from around the world to come together in celebration of unity and mutual support.

During the WDC, nearly 200 flags from countries and regions around the world will be on display, creating a fun backdrop for commemorative photos. Guests are encouraged to take pictures with their own country’s flag, or connect with fellow travelers and locals by sharing a moment with someone holding theirs. The aim is not just to take photos, but to create opportunities for conversation and friendship across cultures.
By sharing these images on social media with the hashtag #WDC, participants can help spread the spirit of the Expo and the message of Katsuo-ji Temple to a global audience.
