Each September, Kitakyushu’s Yahatahigashi Ward celebrates the Yumeji Festival, a popular community tradition honoring painter and poet Takehisa Yumeji. Known as a pioneer of kawaii culture and famed for his dreamy portraits of beautiful women, Yumeji (1884–1934) also lived for a time in Edamitsu, working at the Yahata Steel Works in his youth. His connection to the area has made the festival a fixture for more than half a century.
The event takes place at Suwa 1-chome Park, where a monument dedicated to Yumeji's poem Yoimachigusa stands. Locals pay floral tribute to the artist while enjoying a lively program of performances and activities. Stage shows range from children's dances and hula to taiko drumming and karaoke contests, ensuring entertainment for all ages. Festival attendees can also join in rice cake tossing, try their luck at lotteries, or watch traditional displays like the Edamitsu Ondo dance.
Food stalls line the park with favorites such as yakisoba, grilled corn, cotton candy, and even banana sales by the local shopping association. Families will also find unique experiences like a children's pharmacist workshop and health consultations, making the festival both fun and community-focused.
To make access easier, a free jumbo taxi service operates during the festival, connecting neighborhoods with the venue. Visitors are encouraged to use public transport or nearby paid parking, as on-site parking is not available.
Please also note, the activities on the festival eve commence from 3pm, and the main day of the festival has activities commencing from 10am. No specific end time is given for either day.
