The Yamaguchi Hagi Okan Maranic & Walk invites participants to enjoy a challenging marathon (maranic is a portmanteau of marathon and picnic) or walk along the historic Hagi Okan Road. This road was a significant transportation route in the Edo period, and stretches 53 kilometers between Hagi City and Hofu City in Yamaguchi Prefecture.
The event features various courses for participants, including an ultramarathon for those that really want to push the limits of endurance. The longest course, spanning 75 kilometers, is a tough and demanding journey, with some sections traversing national and prefectural roads, rugged cobblestone paths, and mountain trails. For those seeking a shorter challenge, there is a 38-kilometer run or walk option. As this is a physically demanding event, thorough preparation and training is highly recommended to ensure a successful experience.
The event starts and finishes in Yuda Onsen, a scenic area in the heart of Yamaguchi City. With its abundance of natural hot springs and free foot baths, it's a relaxing and peaceful destination, perfect for unwinding after the race. Yamaguchi City itself was recognized by the New York Times as one of their top 52 places to visit in 2024, if you needed any additional incentive to consider this event.
The event will take place from 5:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with pricing as follows:
- 75-kilometer ultramarathon course: 15,000 JPY
- 38-kilometer Walk: 10,000 JPY (5,000 JPY for junior high school students and younger)
- 38-kilometer running course: 10,000 JPY
The application deadline for this year is Sunday, March 2nd, and registration is now open. For more information and to apply, please visit the event's official website.
