The Shichikawa Dam in Wakayama may be a man-made waterway, but there's plenty of natural beauty to enjoy here as well. There are approximately 3000 Somei Yoshino cherry trees planted around the perimeter of the reservoir, and a cherry blossom festival takes place in late March to early April to celebrate their splendor. It's a such a popular location to enjoy sakura season that it has even been named as one of Japan's Top 100 cherry blossom viewing spots.
For those who can't make it to the area during the day, there is an evening illumination during the blooming season where traditional Japanese lanterns are used to light up the trees. It's a great option for those who are seeking an ethereal, romantic sakura viewing option.
