Visitors can now take part in hands-on conservation efforts at one of Japan’s most iconic natural landmarks: the Tottori Sand Dunes. As part of a long-term plan to protect the dunes from invasive plant species, Tottori is welcoming both domestic and international tourists to join special weeding sessions this summer.

Over the past 20 years, non-native vegetation has spread across 20 to 30 percent of the dunes, disrupting the natural sand flow, causing erosion, and threatening native biodiversity, according to the Tottori Sand Dunes Mirai Council. Regular volunteer weeding sessions were launched in 2004, and now, travelers from around the world are invited to join in.

The sessions are part of activities connected to World Sand Dune Day, a global annual initiative held this year on June 28 that raises awareness about the ecological and cultural importance of dunes. In 2025, Tottori became the first Asian collaborator with the UK-based nonprofit Sand Dune and Shingle Network, which organizes the international day.

On, May 30, a community kick-off event brought together 100 local volunteers who removed invasive weeds as the sun set over the dunes. The pulled plants are being repurposed sustainably, some turned into compost and others crafted into handmade washi paper sold at the Sand Dunes Visitor Center.

Now, every Saturday and Sunday from July 12 to September 7 (excluding August 16 and 17), 90-minute weeding sessions will be open to all, starting at 6:00am. Whether you’re a nature lover, a traveler looking to make a positive impact, or simply seeking a meaningful way to experience Japan’s unique landscapes, these events offer a rewarding and memorable way to connect with local efforts in environmental preservation.

Getting there

Tottori is located in the Chugoku region, along the Sea of Japan coast. It’s approximately three hours by train from Osaka and 1.5 hours by plane from Tokyo. The sand dunes are about 15 minutes by bus from downtown Tottori (get off at Sakyu Kaikan).
