Every summer from August 13th to 15th, Tottori comes alive with the vibrant Shan Shan Festival, one of the region’s largest and most beloved events. This celebration is a true feast for the senses, combining music, dance, and colorful paper umbrellas in a lively tribute to local tradition.
The name "Shan Shan" is inspired by the bubbling sounds of Tottori’s natural hot springs, as well as the soft chime of bells hanging from the festival’s signature umbrellas. The highlight of the event is the Shan Shan Umbrella Dance, rooted in the traditional Inaba Umbrella Dance from eastern Tottori Prefecture. The choreography has been simplified to encourage widespread participation, making it a welcoming and inclusive experience for all.
On August 14th, the festival reaches its peak with the Issei Kasa Odori, an awe-inspiring umbrella dance parade. As many as 4,000 dancers fill the streets of Tottori’s city center, twirling their colorful umbrellas in synchronized movements. The sight of thousands of performers moving in unison, accompanied by rhythmic music, creates an unforgettable spectacle.
Beyond the parade, visitors can immerse themselves in the festive atmosphere, enjoying street food, cultural performances, fireworks displays, and the hospitality of Tottori’s residents. Whether you're game to join the dance or would prefer to simply take in the sights, the Shan Shan Festival is a must-see event that captures the spirit of summer in Japan.
There is no admission fee for attending the event, but do bring yen if you plan on purchasing street food items.

The festival takes place in the Tottori City Center, located just minutes from Tottori Station on the San'in Main Line.
