In my opinion, Tottori Prefecture is one of Japan's hidden gems. There are some amazing things to do and see in this region - for instance, did you know that Japan has sand dunes? You'll find them a short distance from the heart of Tottori City, and they are well worth the visit. Around an hour by train from Tottori City is Yonago, the gateway to neighboring Shimane Prefecture and home to a wonderful vegan restaurant called Hibi no Kate.
There are a range of different main dishes available here, each priced around the 1000 to 1200 yen mark. The meals are hearty, too - there are options like fried "chicken" made from soy protein or vegan hamburger steak, served with brown rice, miso soup, and a range of vegetable sides. If you're after a lighter option, the bean and vegetable curry or the teriyaki brown rice burger come highly recommended.
If you're visiting here with children, Hibi no Kate also offer kids meals which come with an egg-free omelet, a vegan hamburger steak, miso soup, vegetable gratin and brown rice. The presentation is adorable and it definitely encourages the little ones to try a bit of everything on their plate.
Another helpful note is that the owner speaks English, and there are also English menus available, making it easy for those of us who don't speak fluent Japanese.
