Overview

Served by the Seibu Ikebukuro Line in its north and the Seibu Shinjuku Line in its south, central Tokyo's western-edged Nishitokyo City is a convenient bedroom community for its residents and home to a few surprises for visitors. There are some amazing places of interest including shrines designated as Cultural Properties of the city, huge public parks and one of the world's most advanced planetariums.

Tanashi Shrine

An incredible image of detail and craftsmanship, the 19th century inner shrine of Tanashi Shrine took two years to create. The shrine's main hall, featuring a golden dragon, has been designated as a Cultural Property of Tokyo and draws visitors from all over the city.

Ikoi no Mori Park

A huge public space, Ikoi no Mori Park features BBQ facilities, sports areas including a skateboard park as well scores of cherry blossom trees, children's play areas with equipment plus ponds and picnicking space.

Fifteen minutes from the South Exit of Hibarigaoka Station on the Seibu Ikebukuro Line.

Tamarokuto Science Museum

Famous for its egg-shaped dome theatre, Tamarokuto Science Center is one of the most advanced planetariums in the world and very family friendly. Filled with interactive displays and exhibits throughout its five rooms, the museum features regular award-winning dome theatre shows.

Sky Tower West Tokyo

A robust mass of metal framing, Sky Tower West Tokyo is a communications tower built in the 1980s. Standing at 195m, the tower is brightly illuminated each evening with its colours changing according to the next day's weather forecast.
