Fujiidera

Temple #11 of the Ohenro 88 temple pilgrimage

Temple eleven in the Shikoku Ohenro pilgrimage is also known as the Wisteria Temple. This is because of the large amount of wisteria (fujii) found within the grounds, which are usually in full bloom in May. Although the temple complex has been destroyed by fire numerous times, the honzon (Main Hall) has always escaped damage and is considered a National Treasure. Hence, it is a popular object of worship for those who desire to escape disaster. From the rear of the temple, follow the well marked trail through the mountains to get to Temple 12.  This is one of the more difficult sections of hiking in the pilgrimage. To get there by public transport, take a JR Tokushima line train to Kamojima station, from there it is a 90 minute walk.
