Traditionally hanami or cherry blossoms viewing parties take place in historical gardens, parks, or large spaces. However, despite Kaizu Osaki being in none of these places, it was still voted as one of Japan's top 100 cherry blossom spots, with almost 600 trees lining an incredible four kilometre stretch along the northern shore of Lake Biwa, Japan's largest lake.
Not only do the cherry blossom trees line the shoreline, but also on the other side of the road to form a tunnel. Here cyclists and cars vie for the best views on the single lane road, and you can expect traffic slowing down when the working families come out on the weekends.
For another view away from the crowds, take a boat or charter a yacht which will give magnificent views from the lake, with Mount Higashiyama behind Biwako Quasi-National Park and the blue skies framing the blossoms from above. I can imagine that the sight would be captivating.
Getting there
From JR Makino Station, take a bus and alight at the "Kaizu-Osaki Guchi" bus stop.

I still clearly remember the day I first landed in Japan, and since then it has been my goal to set foot in all 47 prefectures. I try to look for less touristy areas, preferring the countryside to the city. I'm always amazed by the many Haagen Dazs and ice cream flavors available only in Japan.
