Edo Style Theme Park
Masato KitamuraThe Hanyu parking area on the Tohoku Expressway in Saitama Prefecture is maybe the most surprising parking area ever.
Hanyu Parking Area, located along the Tōhoku Expressway in Saitama Prefecture, is far more than just a convenient stop for drivers—it’s a destination in itself. Designed with an Edo-style theme, the southbound rest area (known as Onihei Edodokoro) recreates the charm of a traditional Japanese post town, blending modern facilities with the nostalgic atmosphere of Japan’s past. Inspired by the historic merchant town of Koedo Kawagoe, Hanyū PA is built to resemble the streets of the Edo period, with wooden façades, tiled roofs, and paper lanterns guiding visitors into a setting that feels like stepping back in time.
Inside, travelers will find a unique selection of food and shops. Local specialties are a highlight, ranging from freshly made soba noodles and unagi (eel) dishes to sweets inspired by regional flavors. Street food–style stalls serve favorites like taiyaki, croquettes, and skewered snacks, enhancing the lively, festival-like feeling of the area. The souvenir shops are equally engaging, offering Kawagoe’s famous sweet potato treats, artisan crafts, and Edo-style trinkets that make for perfect gifts or keepsakes.
While the design evokes history, the facilities remain thoroughly modern and comfortable. Clean restrooms, accessible facilities, and spacious seating areas ensure that the practical needs of drivers and passengers are met. The careful blend of nostalgia and convenience makes Hanyū PA stand out among Japan’s many highway rest areas, turning a quick break into a memorable travel experience.
For those traveling between Tokyo and northern Japan, stopping at Hanyū Parking Area is more than just a rest—it’s a chance to explore a pocket of cultural heritage along the way. Whether enjoying a quick bite, browsing traditional goods, or simply soaking up the Edo-period atmosphere, visitors leave with the sense that they’ve experienced a little piece of old Japan during their journey.
Hanyu PA is located along the Tohoku Expressway (E4), a tolled road on Japan's highway system, and just north of Hanyu IC.
Onihei Edodokoro is located on the southbound side ("Up," agari) towards Tokyo — the northbound Hanyu PA is offers a more conventional design.
