Officially known as Hashima, Gunkanjima (軍艦島, “Battleship Island”) flourished as a coal mining community, starting in 1890. The coal mine closed in 1974 and the island has been deserted since then. The island is now a World Heritage site, and it is also a popular tourist attraction. Gunkanjima was used a model for the movie Attack on Titan, and for the Dead City featured in the movie Skyfall. You can take tours that bring you up close to this haunting island, or even make landfall and explore the ruins on foot.

A mystic island indeed; you could call it 'Ghost Island', but to me it feels more like an art museum, also considering that "Battleship Island" (that's how it is also called) has been put on the tentative UNESCO World Heritage list as part of the Modern Industrial Heritage Sites in Kyushu and Yamaguchi. Before its reopening to visitors in 2009 landing on the island was sometimes permitted to journalist only. Then, after an important pier restoration for better and safer landing, the island was finally opened for tourists as well. I will show you a series of images of my time exploring the remains of this mysterious place.

Hashima: "Battleship Island" (Gunkanjima) was a historic coal mining that began in the 1800's. Near Nagasaki, the island became the most densely populated place on the face of the earth.

Each year in early January, Nagasaki's Suisen-no-Sato Park is filled with the color and scent of around 10 million daffodils in bloom. The park's location on the tip of the Nagasaki Peninsula affords some incredible views of the flowers flanked by the coastal scenery.
