Tazawako or Lake Tazawa is the place of legendary beauty. In ancient times there was a story of a girl who became a guardian dragon. These days, the spy series Iris celebrates the mystery of the lake. One of the scenes was made in the restaurant Orae which is next to Shirahama Beach, an easy ten minute walk from the Tazawako Youth Hostel.
Orae looks like an Swedish cafe with blonde country log cabin like tables and chairs, but it serves German , Italian and Japanese yoshoku cuisine like croquettes, hamburg patties and ginger pork cutlets with soy infused sauce and coleslaw. This is light and healthy eating, though its most popular items are sausages, fried croquettes and home made German style beer.
German, Italian and Japanese yoshoku cuisine dominate the menu, with family favorites like croquettes, hamburg patties and ginger pork cutlets with soy infused sauce as well as coleslaw. This is wholesome and unpretentious eating, even though its most popular items are sausages, fried croquettes and craft beer. For dessert the chef takes the artistic route with tofu ice cream, which is nearly overwhelmed by the fig like jam sauce, very flavorsome with hints of raisins, honey, toffee and chutney.
