Each autumn, Osaka hosts one of Japan's most anticipated women’s tennis events: the Kinoshita Group Japan Open. Also known as the Japan Women's Open, this WTA 250 tournament brings together top-level athletes from around the world to compete on the outdoor hard courts of Utsubo Tennis Center.
The event features a 32-player singles draw and 16 doubles teams, offering fans plenty of fast-paced matches across several days of competition. The main court, which seats around 5,000 spectators, provides an intimate viewing experience that allows tennis enthusiasts to get up close to the action.
Originally part of a combined men's and women's tournament, the Japan Open became a women's-only event in 2009. Following a three-year hiatus, it made a successful return to the WTA calendar in 2023 at the 250 level, reaffirming Osaka's role as a key host city in Japan's tennis landscape.
As part of the WTA's Asian Swing, the tournament provides valuable ranking points and a strong competitive platform for both established and emerging players. The timing also makes it a seasonal favorite, since autumn in Osaka offers comfortable temperatures and a vibrant city atmosphere for both visitors and players alike.
