For travelers enchanted by the iconic "stacked torii" effect of destinations like Kyoto's Fushimi Inari Shrine but seeking a quieter, off-the-beaten-path alternative, Niimi's Saidouji Temple offers a perfect escape.

Tucked into the hills of western Okayama Prefecture, this peaceful temple is known for its striking approach lined with 78 white torii gates. The bright gates stand out against the lush landscape, creating a dramatic pathway that invites slow, reflective walks and photo moments without the crowds.

The temple is also known as one of Okayama's best destinations for hydrangeas during early summer. Somewhere around 11,000 of the blooms add pops of blue, purple, and pink to the grounds, and the first part of July is recommended as prime time to enjoy them. In addition, irises also feature prominently, with around 5000 of those to appreciate.

According to local legend, Saidouji was founded by Kukai (also known as Kobo Daishi), the influential monk and scholar who brought Shingon Buddhism to Japan in the early 9th century. While the temple may not attract the same international spotlight as larger pilgrimage sites, its unique features and tranquil setting make it a rewarding discovery for those exploring deeper into rural Japan.

Getting there

Saidouji Temple is located approximately 35 minutes from Kayo IC on the Okayama Expressway, or 45 minutes from Niimi IC on the Chugoku Expressway. On-site parking is available for around 100 regular-sized vehicles. Please note that the road to the temple is very narrow in some places, so exercise caution on your drive.

For those visiting via public transportation, the temple is around 30 minutes by taxi from Ishiga Station, which is served by the JR Hakubi Line.
