I was introduced to Kame-sho by a friend living in Beppu, and it was a very delicious lunch. We ordered so much sushi that we couldn't finish it all, but luckily they do takeaways and packed it in a lovely little box complete with condiments and chopsticks. Depending on the type of fish, the prices of each sushi plate varies. The cheapest ones start from ¥130 and range from Katsuo (skipjack tuna) to squid and octopus. The next level up starts at ¥150, and this range includes shrimp, Aji (horse mackerel), and tuna. Next is the ¥200 section, and this includes squid, shrimp, and yellowtail. Then you have the ¥260 section which has salmon, fatty salmon, fish roe, and salt water eel. The most expensive sushi costs ¥360 per plate and this range includes all the goodies such as fatty tuna, giant prawns, scallops, and sea urchin. Depending on your budget, you can order accordingly and still have some delicious sushi whichever price range you are going for.
Kame-sho is a hugely popular restaurant in Beppu, so do go early if you can. The best time to go is lunch time, as that is when they still have all the types of fish available. As the day goes on and they get more and more customers, they start to run out of the more popular kinds of fish, leaving limited options available at dinner time. One good thing about this restaurant is that they work non-stop, meaning there is no break between the end of the lunch time shift and the start of the dinner time shift. This means that you could show up at 3:00 or 4:00 pm in the afternoon and still be able to eat some delicious sushi. Be sure to make a visit to Kame-sho if you are in the area and want some good food that is trusted by the Beppu locals!
