A "detour destination" refers to an additional location added to a primary travel itinerary to enhance the overall trip, and the team at Expedia have created a list of detour spots around the world to consider for the coming year. Fukuoka was named as the perfect detour destination for people planning a Tokyo trip, and there are several reasons that make it somewhere worth exploring.

The city's cuisine is just one of them, and this isn't a new realization—the folks at Lonely Planet named Fukuoka as a top spot for foodies several years ago. Some of the city’s culinary highlights include traditional yatai street stalls, rich Hakata ramen, and exceptional seafood, all of which reflect its vibrant and diverse food scene.

This part of Japan also has plenty to offer culture and history lovers, with attractions like Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, known for its stunning plum blossoms and academic significance; the Fukuoka Castle Ruins, which provide scenic views and insights into samurai history; and Nanzoin Temple, home to one of the world's largest reclining Buddha statues.

Nature fans don't miss out, either. The urban area is home to Ohori Park which is renowned for its pond and gardens, and Nokonoshima Island is just a short ferry ride away—it's home to various seasonal flowers throughout the year.

According to the Expedia Detour Destinations list, 63% of travelers are likely to visit a lesser-known, less crowded spot for their next trip. Fukuoka is a standout choice, offering an authentic taste of Japan paired with a laid-back atmosphere.

Getting there

Fukuoka Airport (airport code FUK) can be accessed from Tokyo's Haneda Airport (HND) via various carriers including JAL and ANA. The flight time is approximately two hours.

Shinkansen services also operate between the two cities, with the journey from Tokyo Station to Hakata Station taking around 5 hours.
