Each November, the historic town of Takatori in Nara Prefecture celebrates its proud samurai heritage with the Takatori Castle Festival. Held at the foot of the Takatori Castle Ruins (one of Japan's three great mountain castles), this annual autumn event brings history to life through colorful parades, traditional performances, and the sound of matchlock guns echoing through the hills.

Visitors can enjoy the procession of armored warriors and townsfolk in period dress as they make their way along the Tosa Kaido, recreating scenes from Japan's feudal past. A highlight of the day is the matchlock gun demonstration by local musketeers, along with performances of sword fighting, iaido, and taiko drumming that showcase Japan's martial and artistic traditions.

The festival also features music shows, exhibitions, and the appearance of Takatori Town's mascot, Takatoririn. Adding to the excitement, actor Taiga Nakano has been a special guest in past editions, drawing fans from around the region.

Beyond the festivities, the area is particularly stunning in late November, when the surrounding forests and nearby Tsubosaka-dera Temple come alive with peak autumn colors. The temple's illuminated foliage offers a serene counterpoint to the festival’s energy, making it an ideal spot for an evening stroll.
