Sendai Umino Mori Aquarium is fun place to visit for families with children or grownups who enjoy the sea. The aquarium occupies a new building with a great collection of ocean inhabitants kept in spacious tanks.
Among the many inhabitants are jelly fish, sardine shoals, stingrays, carp, sea tortoises and many more, both large and small. A special section is occupied by the penguins who, well, quite funny to watch.
There are some interesting attractions for kids too like a shallow pool with peep holes that allow children to get into the middle of the pool from beneath and explore. Or you can watch fish floating above your head. For a small fee, some fish like carp can be fed by visitors with special food.
Several dolphin and sea lion shows feature each day. Between shows there are excursions to the water stage where, for a separate fee, you can play and take photos with a dolphin.
Finally, on the ground floor you will find a spacious café, gift shop and a children’s sand playground.
Getting there
Take the JR Senseki Line from Sendai Station to Nakanosakae Station. From the square near this station there is a bus stop with a penguin picture where a free shuttle bus picks up visitors.
