This year marks the 80th anniversary of the original publication of The Railway Series, the iconic stories that introduced Thomas the Tank Engine and his locomotive friends to the world. Fans can celebrate all things trains at the Kyoto Railway Museum during the upcoming exhibition The World of Thomas the Tank Engine: Tales of Working Locomotives, running from March 15th to May 6th, 2025.

Visitors to the museum can explore this immersive exhibition dedicated to Thomas' legacy, which began as a story told by British pastor Wilbert Awdry to his son, Christopher, and evolved into a global phenomenon. This exhibition highlights the history of the series, its impact on generations of children, and the enduring charm of the characters.

Admission to the special exhibition is included with admission to the Kyoto Railway Museum, which is open daily except Wednesdays. The museum itself is a fascinating destination for railway enthusiasts, offering a wide range of exhibits on Japan’s railway history, including trains, locomotives, and interactive displays.
