teamLab Kyoto to Open an Immersive Teahouse

A destintion where tea becomes part of the artwork

Visitors to Kyoto will soon be able to enjoy a cup of tea in a rather unusual setting, with teamLab preparing to open a new immersive teahouse surrounded by a sea of light.

Called Teahouse in a Sea of Light, the new space will open on November 20 at teamLab Biovortex Kyoto, the digital art museum located within walking distance of Kyoto Station.

The experience brings together traditional Japanese tea culture and contemporary technology, with the act of preparing tea becoming part of the artwork itself. In the featured installation, Tea in Spontaneous Order, a freshly prepared cup of tea begins to glow with its own distinctive rhythm and produce sounds. The light and tones interact with the surrounding installation and nearby cups of tea, creating an ever-changing visual and audio experience.

Rather than simply viewing an artwork, visitors become part of its creation, with the tea itself forming part of the immersive display before being enjoyed.

The new addition offers an interesting take on Japan's long-standing tea culture, which has traditionally placed importance on the preparation and appreciation of a simple cup of tea. Here, that familiar ritual is reimagined through light, sound, and digital technology.

teamLab Biovortex Kyoto opened in October 2025 and features more than 50 interactive artworks and installations across an approximately 10,000-square-metre space. The new teahouse adds another experience to consider for visitors interested in seeing a more contemporary side of Kyoto.

Getting there

teamLab Biovortex Kyoto is located approximately seven minutes on foot from Kyoto Station's Hachijo East Exit.
