東福寺の本堂と開山堂を結ぶ通天橋は、春、渓谷・洗玉澗（せんぎょくかん）の緑陰に憩う。時折ぱらつく雨の中、青紅葉に松、杉の若葉が、むせ返るような生命の息吹を発する外回廊を歩いた。左右に折れる回廊を進み、最後の石段を上って楼門をくぐれば、開山堂の楼閣と池泉式庭園、普門院の市松模様の枯山水が現れる。腰掛けて、雨に濡れた青葉の匂いを楽しむ。東福寺の秋もまた、紅葉に燃える景色が素晴らしい。
