Kumamoto Says Sayonara to IC Cards

The cost of updating IC reading devices was a key factor

IC cards, such as Suica, Pasmo, and ICOCA are a favorite among travelers in Japan because they simplify the entire travel experience. The single card format covers multiple forms of transportation, including trains, subways, buses, and even some ferries, eliminating the need to buy individual tickets or calculate fares for each trip.

However, recent changes in Kumamoto Prefecture as of November 16th, 2024 saw IC card usage nixed, with the cost of updating IC card reading devices cited as the key reason.

Which companies are included in the IC card payment discontinuation?

Kyushu Sanko Bus Co., Sanko Bus Co., Kumamoto Electric Railway Co., Kumamoto Bus Co., and Kumamoto Toshi Bus Co. are all part of the IC card discontinuation.

How do I pay for transport fares in Kumamoto now?

Cash is always still an option, and the regional Kumamon no IC Card is also accepted. Details on how to purchase one of these regional IC cards can be found here (in English) if you'd like to go down that route. Along with paying for transport fares, the Kumamon no IC Card can be used at a number of retail outlets in Kumamoto, including Lawson convenience stores and Tsuruya department stores.

Will they reinstate IC card payments eventually?

At this stage, the goal is to implement a more cost-effective alternative that accepts credit cards, aiming to reduce operational expenses while maintaining convenience. This is anticipated to take place around the March 2025 timeframe.

While the discontinuation of IC card payments in Kumamoto may present some inconvenience for travelers unaware of the changes, the regional card or cash still remain as viable alternatives until a credit card-accepting solution is rolled out.
