六月。明月院に、青や紫、白の花々に彩られる華やかな季節が訪れる。境内のそこここに揺れる紫陽花と、本堂奥の庭園に咲く花菖蒲の競演である。明月院（最明寺）は、鎌倉時代中期に北条得宗家と強いつながりを築いた。五代執権、北条時頼は、出家してこの地に持仏堂を造営し、その臨終にあたっては、敷地内の北亭で座禅を組んで果てたという。時頼の宝篋印塔は総門を入って左手奥にある。37歳という若さでこの世を去った卓眼の執権も、760年後、まさかこれほど多くの人々が、世界中からこの寺を訪れるようになるとは、想像もしなかったであろう。
