Each year, typically on the first Sunday of November, the town of Maenohama in Kagoshima Prefecture is home to a cosmos festival. Along with the spacious fields of colorful flowers to appreciate, the event has a range of stage performances including taiko drumming, along with food booths and local produce available for purchase.
One of the fun elements of this festival are the unique scarecrows set up around the fields - there are ones made to look like samurai, characters from Japanese folklore tales, and more.
Admission to the event is free of charge.
Getting there
The Maenohama Cosmos Festival is located around a 5 minute taxi ride from the JR Maenohama Station, served by the Ibusuki Makurazaki Line. In usual years, there are typically shuttle bus services that also run between the station and the venue, but there has been no official word if that will take place this year.
For those who plan to drive, on-site parking is available.
