Nanohana (rapeseed flowers) are a symbol of spring's impending arrival in Japan, and their vibrant yellow hues add a colorful dose of cheer to a variety of parks and gardens across the country. In Kagoshima's Ibusuki City, you can enjoy these flowers in a unique way – while running a marathon!
The Ibusuki Nanohana Marathon has been held on the second Sunday of January for over 40 years now, and the event allows participants to traverse a scenic course that also includes views of Lake Ikeda (Kyushu's largest lake), Kaimondake, and the area's famous hot sand beach.
The participation fee for the full marathon is 10,000 yen, and more information can be found on the official event website.
Getting there
The marathon starts in front of the Fureai Plaza Nanohana Museum, which can be accessed in 5 minutes by taxi from Ibusuki Station. The station is served by the JR Ibusuki Makurazaki Line.
