A surprise find on the outskirts of the little town of Miyanojo, Hokusatsu Regional Park in Kagoshima, Kyushu, is a massive park that just keeps giving. Visiting, you think you've seen it all only to turn another corner to find another great surprise.
Basking in nature
There are flower gardens, a bamboo forest, a sakura cherry blossom garden, grassy areas and two ponds. Another delight is the foot onsen. This foot hot spring is just what you need after taking a trek along one of the parks many paths or simply as a way to relax. Dip your feet and enjoy a soak while breathing in the fresh air.
A host of traditional buildings offer, not only a tranquil environment for a picnic or some peaceful time to reflect, but also traditional craft workshops and a traditional tea ceremony. (It's better to book in advance.)
Fun for all the family
No matter the age range of your party, this park has fun for all. Younger children will love the playground and open grassy areas to run around, while older children and adults can enjoy the giant wooden assault course and climbing course. Outdoor games or grass sports can be enjoyed here on the purpose-built pitches. The whole family will enjoy the observation deck, which offers stunning views of the park and the surrounding area. It's definitely worth the climb to the top!
Fireflies bring light to the park
If you're lucky enough to visit the park during May, you’ll experience the magical sight of fireflies lighting up the park at one of the beautiful ponds.
Make your visit an overnight stay
The park also offers eight bungalows (each sleeping six to eight people), 11 spots for campers and a camping site for tent camping. There is also on-site indoor public bath and outdoor hot spring, which can be enjoyed by happy campers. Tents, sleeping and cooking equipment can be rented from the park centre.
All in all, Hokusatsu Regional Park is simply a great place for family and friends to enjoy Japan's wonderful natural surroundings.
