Furano is one of the most popular destinations in Hokkaido. In summer flower fields are cultivated in many farms and the blossoms attract thousands of visitors every year. In addition, the verdant meadows are surrounded by rolling hills framing the magnificent Daisetsuzan National Park. You can imagine that with such a bucolic atmosphere, mass market accommodation can be hard to find in the peak visiting season from April to October. However, if you are travelling on a budget and the idea of sleeping at the mercy of the elements doesn't exactly appeal, a great alternative is the Yukari Log House.
This guesthouse is a great value and you can stay here from ¥2000 for a bed in dormitory with no bunk beds. A complimentary breakfast of toast with butter and jam, coffee and tea is included. There is also a free laundry and drying service. The distance from the town center is probably the only drawback, but the owner offers a free shuttle service to and from the train station. On the other hand, you have the opportunity to stay in an authentic log house, built by the owner’s father and immersed in a very beautiful forest. Not to mention, you can use their rental bikes with no charge.
There are various buildings on site, with three set aside for family or private rooms, one for the front desk and cafe, and one for dormitory, common room and services. The interior is very basic but the place is clean and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. The wooden floor creaks under the steps and the air is always filled with the fragrance of the forest. At night you can enjoy the starry sky between the black silhouettes of the tree branches.
The owners live there and they undoubtedly are among the kindest and most hospitable people you can meet. They are always happy to assist you with any of your needs, just ask them and you will get help and, even more importantly, big smiles.
