Tokachi is nicknamed the “Sweets Kingdom.” Hokkaido is known for its quality dairy goods, and the area produces high-quality sugar and flour, among other ingredients. This abundance of superior ingredients makes it a conducive place for making delicious sweets. There are sweets shops all around the Tokachi area, with many located in the city of Obihiro and within walking distance of JR Obihiro station. Below are six well-known shops.

Tokachi Toteppo Factory

Starting out the list is the Tokachi Toteppo Factory located in Obihiro. This local favorite is set in a large park area surrounded by a beautiful walking path. So, feel free to take your treats for a walk. Specializing in both cheeses and cheesecakes, the shop offers a variety of cheesecakes including fromage, camembert, and natural. Cheeses include parmesan, goat, blue, mozzarella, and many more. Other than cheese specialties, the shop has tarts, tiramisu, puddings, and parfaits. The Tokachino Fromages is a factory and shop that uses cheese from cows that grew up along the Satsunai River, which is known as one of the clearest rivers in all of Japan. You will need a car to reach the shop, but the scenery and drive (around 30 minutes) are quite nice, so it is highly recommended for those looking to travel the countryside. Although famous for its award-winning cheese products, the shop also offers a fine selection of soft creams, gelato, and yogurts to satisfy the sweet tooth. They are partnered with the t-sweets brand, another famous sweets shop in the area.

Rokkatei is one of the most popular sweets shops in Hokkaido and has many outlets in the prefecture's major cities. However, the main store can be found in Obihiro. The first floor of the Rokkatei building houses the sweets shop. It sells everything from cream puffs and cakes to caramels and cookies. The most popular product is the marusei butter sandwich and strawberry chocolate. The caramels from Rokkatei are also a popular choice and are more crunchy than chewy as they have nuts embedded in them. There is also a café on the second level of the shop with a variety of sweet drinks and standard coffee and teas. The location is nice for a relaxing drink and some people-watching from the large windows above.

Taiyaki is a piping hot, fish-shaped (not fish taste!) baked product filled with sweet stuffing! The owner makes the taiyaki from scratch for every order so the product is guaranteed to be fresh! The baked part of the taiyaki is a beautiful brown and crunchy surface, while the inside, no matter if the filling is azuki bean or cream and cheese, is served steaming hot. The azuki bean filling is sweet and fragrant while the cream cheese is a unique combination of sweet and cheesy. The soft gooey inside combines with the crunchy baked skin to form an incredible texture. Like the others, the flour, sugar, and red beans all come from the Tokachi area.
