Shimamui Coast at Cape Shakotan

A rocky coastline colored "Shakotan Blue"

Best accessed by car (about two hours from Sapporo), the Shimamui Coast at Cape Shakotan offers wonderful views of the Sea of Japan (you'll quickly understand the reason for the catchphrase Shakotan Blue) . After walking through a narrow, dark tunnel (watch your head), you'll find yourself at a viewpoint worth a few minutes of your time and a few frames from your camera. Then, if you're up to a 10-minute hike, head down to the rocky beach to soak up the atmosphere. The trail is well maintained and manageable even for children, though good shoes will make things easier. Be sure to save energy for the return trip — unless you're planning to build a raft.

After five years in rural Mie prefecture, I moved to Sapporo in the summer of 2012. As I explore Hokkaido and the rest of Japan, I'll share some of my favorite places through JapanTourist. In Sapporo, I edit an online magazine for Hokkaido called Hokkaido Explorer (http://www.HokkaidoExplorer.com).
