Ryokan Onomichi Nishiyama

Luxury Ryokan in a quieter part of Onomichi

Ryokan Onomichi Nishiyama is a luxury ryokan located in a quiet neighborhood of Onomichi.  Built on the grounds of an old tea house from 1943, this traditional inn is an elegant and hospitable place to stay while visiting Onomichi.  Each of the units is a separate structure and the styles vary, with some having outdoor soaking tubs or different views of the garden or sea.  Rooms can accommodate from 1-4 people depending on the unit.  The interiors are traditional in design with futon bedding and traditional bathrooms including hinoki soaking tubs.  The hotel staff are hospitable and welcoming, and check-in is an organized process including tea, snacks and introduction to the self-service lounge area, where various complimentary drinks, snacks and alcoholic beverages can be taken back to the room.  There is also a library with a selection of books on folk art and crafts.  The grounds are well maintained including a central garden for strolling and views of the Inland Sea.

The price of the accommodation includes dinner and breakfast.  The food is a standout and dinner is served in a communal dining room at the counter.  Dining is organized by schedule to accommodate the guests.  The fare is European influenced but highlights the local seafood and vegetables of the Setouchi region in a multi-course presentation.  The dining staff are gracious and helpful in explaining the origins of each dish.  Breakfast is also served in the dining room and consists of traditional fare including grilled fish, rice, soup and an assortment of vegetables.

The location is somewhat away from the Onomichi city center, so a cab is necessary to reach the ryokan, but this adds to its serene and quiet setting.  Bicycles are available on site for guests to explore the nearby Onomichi area. An excursion on a fishing boat can also be arranged for an additional fee.

Getting there

Ryokan Onomichi Nishiyama is a 10 minute cab ride from Onomichi Station.  From the Shin Onomichi Shinkansen station, the ryokan is a 13 minute cab ride.
