Lockheart Castle Lavender Festival 2026

Celebrate lavender through sight, scent, taste, and hands-on experiences

If you're planning a summer trip to Japan and want to experience something a little different from the usual temples and gardens, Gunma Prefecture's Lockheart Castle offers a unique setting with a distinctly Japanese seasonal twist.

Throughout the summer, the Lockheart Castle Lavender Festival transforms the historic Scottish castle into a purple wonderland inspired by one of the season's most beloved flowers. Originally built in Scotland in 1829 before being relocated and reconstructed in Japan, the castle provides an unexpected backdrop for a festival that celebrates lavender through sight, scent, taste, and hands-on experiences.

Visitors can stroll beneath the expanded "Lavender Sky," where purple flowers and colorful umbrellas create a dreamy canopy overhead, while lavender-themed displays, floral water basins, and seasonal decorations provide countless photo opportunities throughout the grounds.

The festival also offers plenty of lavender-inspired treats. Sip a Lavender Earl Grey Milk Tea in the castle's English tearoom, try a magical butterfly pea drink that changes color with a squeeze of lemon, or enjoy a limited-time Lavender Afternoon Tea featuring lavender jelly.

Those looking for interactive experiences can create a lavender-inspired gemstone bracelet, take part in an aromatherapy workshop using lavender essential oils, or make a castle-themed snow globe as a keepsake. One of the castle's signature attractions, the princess dress experience, also features elegant lavender-colored gowns, making it easy to capture memorable photos in the fairytale setting.
