Overview
The Toei Oedo Line is the only subway tunnel to be completely underground. Its magenta line features a massive thirty-eight stations, the most of any in Tokyo and is the second longest train tunnel in the country. Starting at Shinjuku-nishiguchi, the line travels through a loop through central Tokyo before heading back past its origin to continue further north-west and end at Hikarigaoka. Here is a simple guide to the line's stations and places to visit along the way.
Shinjuku-nishiguchi, Higashi-shinjuku, Wakamatsu-kawada
Shinjuku-nishiguchi station is close to the calming Joen-ji Temple, Higashi-shinjuku station will take you to a series of local temples and shrines like Hozen-ji and Nishimukiten while Wakamatsu-kawada station is home to Shusse Inari Shrine and its curious children's play area and equipment.
Ushigome-yanagicho, Ushigome-kagurazaka, Iidabashi
Just north-west of Ushigome-yanagicho station lies a plethora of local temples and shrines like Kokoku-ji and its digital walls. Ushigome-kagurazaka station is a few moments from Zenkoku-ji Temple while Iidabashi station is home to the Geisha Shindo pathway where geisha used to ply their trade.
Kasuga, Hongo-sanchome, Ueno-okachimachi
Kasuga station gives access to the Bunkyo Civic Center observation deck, Hongo-sanchome station takes you to the Eleven-faced Kannon statue and the University of Tokyo's museum while Ueno-okachimachi station is home to the traditional comedy theatre of Oedo Ueno-hirokoji-tei.
Shin-okachimachi, Kuramae, Ryogoku
Shin-okachimachi station is right by Mograg Gallery and Gallery & Space Siang, Kuramae station will take you straight to Kayadera Temple and Kuramae Shrine while Ryogoku station is close to the famous Sumida Hokusai Museum.
Morishita, Kiyosumi-shirakawa, Monzen-nakacho
Morishita station gives access to the curious Museum of Safes & Locks, Kiyosumi-shirakawa station is right by the fabulous Kiyosumi Teien Garden and Reigan-ji Temple while Monzen-nakacho station takes you to the flea markets of Tomioka Hachimangu Shrine as well the kid-friendly Fukagawa Park.
Tsukishima, Kachidoki, Tsukijishijo
Tsukishima station is close to Nakanoshima Park, a park on an island bridge and Meiji-Maru Museum and its sailboat exhibit, Kachidoki station gives immediate access to the Tsukishima 2nd Children's Park and Tsukijishijo station is home to the Hamarikyu Asahi Concert Hall.
Shiodome, Daimon, Akabanebashi
Shiodome station gives access to the small but serene Italy Park, Daimon station has its amazing views from the Seaside Top Observatory while Akabanebashi station takes you to the ancient royal tomb of Shiba Maruyama Kofun in Shiba Park.
Azabu-juban, Roppongi, Aoyama-itchome
Cosmopolitan Azabu-juban station is close to the famous Kimi-chan statue of the famous nursery rhyme, Akai Kutsu, featuring the little girl in red shoes. Roppongi station is home to non-stop night life including the Abbey Road Tokyo music venue while Aoyama-itchome station services the robotics and car showroom of the Honda Aoyama Building.
Kokuritsu-kyogijo, Yoyogi, Shinjuku
Kokuritsu-kyogijo station is close to the Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery, Yoyogi station will take you to Gut's Soul, a very popular and down-to-earth yakiniku restaurant while Shinjuku station, home to almost everything, offers access to a the extremely charming Puppet Theatre PUK.
Tochomae, Nishi-shinjuku-gochome, Nakano-sakaue
Tochomae station is right by Shinjuku Chuo Park, its flea markets and the grand Shinjuku Juniso Kumano Shrine, Nishi-shinjuku-gochome station will take you to Irish Pub Peter Cole and the lovely little pond of Nikenya Park while Nakano-sakaue station is home to Shiratama Inari Shrine.
Higashi-nakano, Nakai, Ochiai-minami-nagasaki
Higashi-nakano station is right by the Atre-vie Higashi Nakano shopping mall, Nakai station will take you to Saisho-ji Temple while Ochiai-minami-nagasaki station is close to the Yoroi Sushi and Yabane Sushi bars.
Shin-egota, Nerima, Toshimaen
Shin-egota station will take you to the Tofuku-ji Eharacho Temple, Nerima station is home to the Heisei Azalea Park while Toshimaen station provides access to the lovely Kouyama Garden and a series of local temples and shrines including Juikka-ji Temple.
Nerima-kasugacho, Hikarigaoka
Nerima-kasugacho station takes you to the quite regal Aisenin Temple while the final stop, Hikarigaoka station is home to the gingko trees of the sprawling Hikarigaoka Park.
