Before we get started, no, the title of this article isn't a typo – Galentine's Day is a pseudo-holiday that has been growing in popularity over recent years. The concept originally came up in an episode of Parks and Recreation aired in 2010 as a way to honor female friendships, and it's celebrated on February 13th, the day before Valentine's Day.

If you're contemplating a little Galentine's Day get-together of your own, this guide covers a number of fun options.

Visit a day spa or onsen

If rest and relaxation takes top spot on your to-do list, heading to one of Japan's many day spas or onsen is the perfect way to do just that. A good option in Tokyo is Spa LaQua, and a little further afield in Kanagawa you'll find Hakone Yunessun, billed as an "onsen theme park" with a variety of quirky baths filled with green tea, wine, and more.

Head out for an afternoon tea

Afternoon tea events present the opportunity for some great food and great conversation with your nearest and dearest, and just about every fancy hotel across the country hosts them. Many events over the winter period are strawberry-themed, with fun menus incorporating this popular seasonal fruit.

Take a cooking class

Going one better than dining out for a special meal is learning how to make it for yourself, and there are some great cooking class options across the country. Several choices are listed right here on the Japan Travel site, including a homestyle Japanese cooking class, a ramen and gyoza making class, or a sushi making experience -- not only do you get to enjoy the food you make, but you get to create some great memories as you cook.

Plan a snow trip

If you and your gal pals are the adventurous type, why not plan a snow trip? A convenient spot for Tokyoites is Gala Yuzawa, which has a seasonal shinkansen stop and can be accessed in around 90 minutes from Tokyo. You literally exit the station's ticket gates and enter the resort! This region of Niigata Prefecture is also renowned for sake, so if you've got the time to stick around for longer than a day trip, be sure to check out some of the breweries in the area.
